Why is Aqueduct Racetrack closed? ›

In December 2022 the NYRA formally announced its intention to upgrade the facilities at nearby Belmont Park to make it suitable to host year-round thoroughbred racing and training, which would ultimately lead to the closure of Aqueduct Racetrack, sometime in late 2026.

With Empire City and Jamaica both closed in the late 1950s, the New York City area had just Aqueduct and Belmont Park, so shutting the latter permanently would hurt racing in the area. Instead, NYRA opted to raze and then rebuild Belmont Park and temporarily moved the track's races, including its stakes, to Aqueduct.

Currently, one annual meeting is held at Aqueduct, usually from the last Wednesday in October until the first Sunday in May. Races had been run on the Inner Dirt Track between the Wednesday after Thanksgiving until just before the Wood Memorial in recent years.

Aqueduct Racetrack, also known as The Big A, is the only racetrack in New York City, occupying 210 acres in South Ozone Park in the borough of Queens.

Nazareth Speedway is a defunct auto racing facility in Lower Nazareth Township in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, which operated from 1910 to 2004. The racing facility operated in two distinct course configurations. In its early years, it was a dirt twin oval layout.

Why the 2024 Belmont Stakes was moved. In December 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the 2024 Belmont Stakes would be at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, some three hours north of Belmont Park because the racetrack was undergoing a major renovation.

The 'failures' are consigned to lower-grade equestrian activities or are simply slaughtered for meat or abandoned. Just as the total number of horses being bred is on the increase, so there is a rise in the percentage of animals who are failing to make the commercial grade.

(CDI) announced that it would consider options to transfer racing away from Arlington Park after 2021. The announcement stemmed from the enactment of the Illinois Gaming Act, which provided for the legalization of sports betting and the construction of new casinos in Illinois.
