Gerald W. O'Neal, who is in his 30s, was charged with possessing seven rocks of crack and keeping them in his 1986 Chevy van.
He also had multiple misdemeanor charges related to a traffic stop in December. O'Neal faced nine to 11 months in jail for the cocaine charge if convicted, but also could have received habitual felon status, which would have meant an additional 10 years in prison. On Tuesday, he showed up 45 minutes late for his 9:30 a.m. trial on the Wake County Courthouse's third floor. Judge Evelyn Hill had already marked him as a failure to appear and issued a warrant for his arrest.
When O'Neal arrived, the judge sent for a jury from the sixth-floor lounge. While the jurors were in elevators coming down, O'Neal left the courtroom, Assistant District Attorney Deborah Shandles said. Jury rejects police discrimination GREENVILLE (AP)- -A federal jury decided Thursday that Fayetteville and its police department were not liable for damages claimed by two former police officers. Jennifer Coleman and Karen Sweeney, who are black, filed a lawsuit in 2001 claiming that they were retaliated against for raising concerns about racial discrimination in the police department in February 1996. During the trial, Coleman testified that she was investigated and received a verbal reprimand because of her comments.
Coleman said the ordeal caused her emotional and psychological distress. confirmed that they talked to agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI questioned them in connection with an investigation into a Fayetteville escort service. The newspaper obtained documents that appear to be FBI investigative reports showing the bureau interviewed Nordgren on Sept. 13, 2000, and Thomas on Jan. 24, 2001.
The documents describe what Nordgren and Thomas told investigators about their contact with prostitutes. The newspaper obtained the documents from sources outside the FBI. An internal Fayetteville Police Department memo had said a woman who once worked as a prostitute identified five city officers who hired her and other women for sex in the late 1990s. FBI probes New Hanover jail death WILMINGTON (AP)Federal investigators are examining the death of New Hanover County jail inmate Gary Rummer, who died of head trauma and a broken neck while in a holding cell.
